The tower of Babel represents human pride. The intent of the people was to build a city to prevent being scattered on the face of the earth. God saw their intent and prevented their purpose by confusing their language.
Fanatical environmentalism has the same pride in human
ingenuity as the builders of the tower of Babel. Thinking you can change the
course of nature is human pride and arrogance. People who do not recognize God
as creator and believe they can manipulate nature are wrong. I am not talking
about reducing pollutants from coal fired power plants, that’s being
responsible. I’m not speaking about gas powered vehicles having catalytic
converters to reduce carbon emissions. I am talking about people who have made
the environment their god. Those who are more concerned about the environment
than the livelihood of people. People who would rather have green grass than
better living conditions for the poor.
In the decades since Kyoto to the present the constant
clamour for money has not ceased. The Davos crowd and government leaders fly to
meetings to discuss the need for more aggressive action on climate change. Those
people fill the atmosphere with pollutants from planes, and we are told we
must reduce our carbon footprint. All the efforts, all the money, all the
harangue has not stopped the temperature from rising. Jesus rebuked religious
leaders saying, “You know
how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs
of the times.” Todays environmental soothsayers believe they know how to change
the cycle of nature, they would gladly have you stand on the rails to stop a
speeding train.
I like nature;
the mountains the prairies, and the ocean, but I’m not a Pantheist. I don’t
like to see garbage thrown around or water contaminated by chemicals, but I’m
not an environmentalist. Humans didn’t create the universe and humans can’t
control the universe. People must serve the Creator not what is created. The
prophet Habakkuk wrote what God said to him; “Alas for you who say to the wood,
'Wake up!' to silent stone, 'Rouse yourself!' Can it teach? See, it is plated
with gold and silver, and there is no breath in it at all. But the Lord is
in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him!” Then after
listening to God Habakkuk said:
Though
the fig tree does not blossom, and no fruit is on the vines; though the produce
of the olive fails and the fields yield no food; though the flock is cut off
from the fold and there is no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in
the LORD; I will exult in the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my
strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, and makes me tread upon the
heights.
